The Spanish tradition of welcoming in the New Year: Champaign at midnight, 12 grapes, one for each toll of the bell, music and dancing and even red underwear for good luck! But, hang on a minute, isn’t it high Summer? Well, you know the Spanish have some strange traditions and customs….welcome to Bérchules in Las Alpujarras, Granada!

Where is it?

On the Southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada National Park, and just over 100kms from Granada city, Chestnut tree lined roads will lead you along the winding route into Bérchules, the district also includes the little hamlet of Alcutar, set just below as you enter Bérchules.

And New Year?

August naturally! Yes, this certainly is an odd one…!

The reason is because some years ago there was a power cut during the regular December 31st celebrations, so some bright spark – sorry! – decided that from then on they would have the whole shenanigans in August instead. Every year, always the first Saturday in August sees the whole crowd enjoy Christmas festivities, the Three Kings, gifts, nativity scenes…and perhaps most bizarrely of all, after the heat of the day…the snow falls on the stroke of midnight!! Artificial snow it may be, but snow all the same! *

Zzzziiiipp (record scratch)…OK, OK, OK so celebrating a year end event is not TOTALLY strange.

That is NOT the only tradition that is celebrated a bit out of sync with the most well-known one. 11 Years ago August 8th was officially declared as Q-Day recognizing COnCEPT Q. That day is set apart for setting annual goals and resolutions and basically to look at where you are going in life. So then…

What does it have to do with the New Year Celebration?

Nothing really, and perhaps about as much as setting new years resolutions does with celebrating Christmas. Coincidentally, the two events coincide in the first 8 days of August. I will leave the partying up to the Spaniards and I will promote and teach effective goal setting and the idea of exercising faith to accomplish them. So how CAN you take advantage of this seemingly out of place event? Well THAT is the easy part…

Outcome-Based Thinking

When you think of New Year’s Resolutions, or perhaps even setting goals, what do you think of? New Year’s Resolutions…”ah that is in January, right?” Why? Why must we associate that act, (which could be good for us) only once a year at it’s beginning only to have broken most of them by Jan 20th? Q-Day is different. And what about goal setting? How’s that going for you? Yes, I am sure that there are some people that consistently and systematically set and achieve goals. Congratulation! But for an amazing 97% of the rest, well we could use a little work in that area, would you agree?

COnCEPT Q is NOT about goal setting

Please don’t get me wrong, the whole COnCEPT Q Philosophy is NOT just about setting and achieving goals. In part, the way the name is written better describes what it is all about: Concept OnQ, a Coherent and Extensive Philosophy of Thought. It is about Outcome-Based Thinking. It is about change. It is about how faith works. It is about taking a raw and unfinished product (you) and polishing it and honing it and perfecting it and basically bringing each and every personal characteristic around to Quarter Four. It is really easy but it is coherent AND extensive! It takes in about every aspect of your life.

Being Extensive has caused us to create System OnQ to help more people understand the whole concept. That is being rolled out this month. That is what Q-Day is all about… the beginning to a Better You!
